music magazine front cover analysis 1

Denotation:
The magazine cover composes a mixture of dark and dull colours in the photograph.  The man is directly looking at the camera; it is a mid-shot showing from the waist to his head. He has a straight posture indicating that he is standing up; he also has his arms folded. The background of the photograph is grey, letting the subject stand out from the background. The photograph is spread across the whole of the magazine cover; likewise the man’s head in the photograph is slightly overlapping the masthead. All the cover lines are placed in the form of the man’s body structure. However the name of the artist is big, and sharp in the corner, whereas the artist is slightly overlapping the ‘m’ in his name. The cover lines in red are quotes, and in black and grey are names of famous individuals, it seems to me that Eminem is the star of the magazine as the magazine quotes “Eminem comes clean”. There is no barcode so I guess the magazine may have been free, we the audience can identify the cultural background just by looking at the selling line as it has an American artist as its front cover. There is also a selling line at the top of the magazine.
Masthead:
Vibe masthead is very distinctive: black at the top fading out to red. The font used is a serif font; the font is very similar to scratch magazine. The founder of vibe magazine was a producer Quincy Jones. Vibe magazine is a music and entertainment magazine purely for an audience who have a keen interest in music and celebrity life. Vibe stands for Visualization and Interaction for Business and Entertainment. The publication predominantly features R&B and hip-hop music artists, actors and other entertainers, vibe magazine owed its success to featuring a broader range of interests than its closest competitors The Source and XXL. Both magazines focused more narrowly on rap music, or the rock & pop-centric Rolling Stone and Spin. Vibe magazine was based in New York City.
Character:
The cover photograph is of a successful American rapper, record producer, songwriter and actor.Marshall Bruce Mathers III’.  His artist name is ‘Eminem’.

Composition:
He has a serious look to him as his facial expressions are quite sharp. This could relate to his music as his music is always based on life’s serious situations. He is posed in a very intimidating way as he gazes directly at the camera with his mouth tensed and arms folded, grabbing the audience attention. This could also relate to his style of music as a lot of people find rap quite intimidating. His posture show’s his serious side just by using non-verbal communication. Likewise he is dressed really plain this shows the simplicity in him.

Costume:
His clothing, he has a black vest top showing his arms, he is wearing a chain and a cross as his pendent, this cross could be symbolic to his religious background, showing his relationship between him and his beliefs.

NVC:
His non-verbal communication is very intimidating but has its serious side to him.
Lighting:
The lighting is medium key it is used really effectively, as the lighting in his face is not too bright or to dark. The use of lighting could contribute to the emotions as an artist, whereas it could suggest his mood in the photograph as his facial expressions say a lot.
Setting:
From what I can see the setting would be most likely to be in a studio, as I am aware that the background is grey.
Cover-lines:
The different cover lines tells us that this magazine doesn’t concentrates on just one genre of music, but draws references to celebrity’s life’s. “I literally almost died” this indicates that vibe magazine not only involves themselves in music but also involves themselves with celebrity’s life. Artist mentioned on cover lines include lil Wayne, drake, Eminem, young money, jay-z, T.I, Swagga jack, Kanye west, Asher Roth, Gucci mane, kid Cudi, Pac div, and Clipse. From what I can tell by the cover lines, vibe magazine focuses on American new and old rap artists.

Target audience:
Considering all of these points, the targeted audience would be (male and female) but in my eyes mostly males, even though it could be versatile. In our society now, male have more of an interest in rap.  I think the age range for the magazine would be 16-30, because teenagers and above have greater knowledge in the lyrics behind the music, also they are aware of what style of music appeal to them.
