contents page annalysis

Denotation: The magazine cover composes dull colours in the in the background.  The man is directly looking at the camera; it is a mid-close showing from the chest to his head. He has a straight posture indicating that he is standing up; he also has his arms up holding his chains. The background of the photograph is purple, letting the subject stand out from the background. The photograph is spread across the bottom half of the magazine cover; likewise the man’s head in the photograph is slightly over lapping the v which symbolises the magazine name ‘vibe’ which is the masthead`` . All the text is not in boxes.  However the content page is big and bold. The texts are separated in categories of fashion or features.
Smaller Masthead:
Vibe masthead is very distinctive: white outline and black filling. The font used is a serif font; the font is very similar to source magazine. The founder of vibe magazine was a producer Quincy Jones. Vibe magazine is a music and entertainment magazine purely for an audience who have a keen interest in music and celebrity life. Vibe stands for Visualisation and Interaction for Business and Entertainment. The publication predominantly features R&B and hip-hop music artists, actors and other entertainers, vibe magazine owed its success to featuring a broader range of interests than its closest competitors The Source and XXL. Both magazines focused more narrowly on rap music, or the rock & pop-centric Rolling Stone and Spin. Vibe magazine was based in New York City.
Issue date:
The issue date is on December 2008
Composition:
He has an arrogant look to him as his is exposing his grills as teeth and holding his wealthy looking chain. This could contradict his wealthy side/arrogant side towards music. He is posed in a very intimidating way as he gazes directly at the camera expressing his wealth by applying a lot of jewellery on, grabbing the audience attention. This could also relate to his style of music as a lot of rappers tend to expose their wealth in different forms. Through his non-verbal communication it could gives a vibe of higher class, authority and respect as the jewellery says it all. Likewise he isn’t wearing any clothes apart from his jewellery.
Costume:
He is not wearing anything apart from his jewellery.
Sub-lines:
The sub-lines are giving us the audience more of an advance on the  story is about
Lighting:
The lighting is medium key it is used really effectively, as the lighting in his face is not too bright or to dark.
Setting:
It seems to me that the photographs took place in a studio, as I am aware that the background is different shades of wine.
Target audience:
In conclusion I strongly feel that the targeted audience would be (male and female). In our society now, male have more of an interest in rap and female’s have an interest in fashion so the magazine works both ways.  I think the age range for the magazine would be 18-35, because teenagers and above keen to know more about fashion and the history behind music.
